Teaching Academic Writing in English

There is an increasing demand for resources to support students’ academic writing, not least in English. To this end, the Unit for Academic Language (ASK) is providing two half-day seminars to assist teachers working with students in English. In these seminars, we will offer strategies to integrate the teaching of academic writing into your regular instruction, as well as provide a forum for sharing with other instructors teaching experiences, skills, and problems. We see these seminars as providing an opportunity to deepen our collaboration with teachers, making ASK available as a teaching resource while developing our understanding of what specific support is needed

20 April 9-12
In the first seminar we will introduce ASK’s approach to teaching academic writing. Participants will be invited to discuss their own experiences from teaching in relation to a scholarly article made available in advance. The seminar will also focus on showing students how to enter the academic conversation with their writing, from formulating a research question or thesis, to structuring their essays and supporting their claims with appropriate evidence and references.

4 May 9-12
The second seminar will target problems students often encounter when writing in English, as well as discussing how best to give feedback on student work. During this second session, participants will also workshop their own course syllabi with the aim of incorporating writing support for students, which could include having a language advisor from ASK work directly with the course.

These sessions are designed as companion pieces, and attendance at both seminars is encouraged, though not required. While these seminars are intended for instructors at the master’s level at the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Arts, and the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, all staff members working with student writing in English are welcome.
